Arraignment
Arraignment occurs after a defendant is indicted. The accused must appear and face formal notification of the charges. The defendant will enter a plea of guilty or not guilty. The defense attorney will acknowledge receipt of the indictment and waive a formal reading of the indictment. The Court will also entertain requests concerning bail. The defendant may enter a plea to revised charges as result of a plea bargain. Defendants may also decide to apply for PTI at this juncture, or be admitted into the program if they have previously applied and been accepted. If a guilty plea is entered at the Arraignment, the Judge will order a presentence investigation to be conducted and a sentencing date will be scheduled. If the matter is not resolved, the Court will schedule the matter for a status conference.
